DARA, Turkey — We made our way down the 100+ steps to the granary/cistern that Roman soldiers built here in southeast Turkey in the 580s — amazed, of course, as our guide intends us to be, by the cavern's depth, even artistry. More amazing, though, is the procession of 20 or so Kurdish people coming down the stairs after us, having untangled themselves from a bus half the size of ours."
