A HISTORIC power struggle is afoot in a Muslim-majority country of the greatest importance to the future of the Islamic world and to the West's relationship with it: Turkey.
In October 2008, prosecutors launched a case against a broad array of figures, including senior military officers, journalists and academics, who were formerly considered untouchable. According to indictments, the defendants belonged to a network called Ergenekon (after a mythical Turkish valley) that was determined to sow chaos to pave the way for a military coup against the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government."
