"Turkey: Aiding and abetting democracy
Elif Aydin
The local elections in Turkey have a carnival atmosphere about them. The fluttering party flags that hang colourfully on lampposts and low lying bridges, the campaign buses with their loud speakers chanting the party's core messages and achievements to neighbourhoods and the huge rallies that fill the public squares with the party faithful. There's something very vibrant about the way elections are carried out in Turkey. Though, as in any other election, there's as much going on outside the electoral process to add interest to its outcomes."
