On the Wind Energy in Turkey

"On the Wind Energy in Turkey

Erdogdu, Erkan (2009): On the Wind Energy in Turkey. Published in: Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews , Vol. 13, No. 6-7 (2009): pp. 1361-1371.

Increase in negative effects of fossil fuels on the environment has forced many countries, including Turkey, to use renewable energy sources. Today, clean, domestic and renewable energy is commonly accepted as the key for future life, not only for Turkey but also for the world. As wind energy is an alternative clean energy source compared to the fossil fuels that pollute the atmosphere, systems that convert wind energy to electricity have developed rapidly. Turkey is an energy importing country, more than half of the energy requirement has been supplied by imports. Turkey's domestic fossil fuel resources are extremely limited. In addition, Turkey's geographical location has several advantages for extensive use of wind power. In this context, renewable energy resources appear to be one of the most efficient and effective solutions for sustainable energy development and environmental pollution prevention in Turkey. Since wind energy will be used more and more in the future, its current potential, usage, and assessment in Turkey is the focus of the present study. The paper not only presents a review of the potential and utilization of the wind power in Turkey but also provides some guidelines for policy makers."

The signing of a peace treaty between Armenia and Turkey in October was a little-noticed milestone. Since the Ottomans deported and murdered Armenians in World War I in what Armenians and much of the world call the Armenian Genocide, Armenians have not been fond of Turkey. For its part, Turkey has long disputed both the genocide and the Armenian presence in Nagorno-Karabakh, an enclave in Azerbaijan, a close Turkish ally. Though signed pledges do not guarantee peace, the U.S.-brokered pledges to reestablish ties and open borders could well prove to be the beginning of the end of this intractable conflict."

American Writers in Istanbul

"World Books Review: American Writers in Istanbul
By World Books ⋅ December 27, 2009

This study of American writers in Istanbul should have been a fascinating example of multicultural literary analysis, but academic jargon and heavy-handed politicizing get in the way.

American Writers in Istanbul: Melville, Twain, Hemingway, Dos Passos, Bowles, Algren, and Baldwin by Kim Fortuny. Syracuse University Press, 238 pages. $34.95.

Reviewed by Vincent Czyz

Ostensibly, the purpose of “American Writers in Istanbul,” as stated in the foreword, is to examine “both the ways in which each author reacts to the great city and the placement of their writings about Istanbul … within their total oeuvre.” Which authors you ask? Literary legends such as Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Ernst Hemingway, John Dos Passos, and James Baldwin. As an avid reader, a writer, and a former inhabitant of Istanbul (for nearly nine years), I was determined to like, laud, and recommend this book. It is with genuine regret that I have to do just the opposite."

In fact, there are plenty of reasons to believe that Turkey, which is moving steadily in the path towards democracy, would make a perfect example for the rest of the Arab and Islamic world."

An Over 100-Year-Old History of Turkish Sephardic Jews in Seattle

"An Over 100-Year-Old History of Turkish Sephardic Jews in Seattle
Tuesday, 06 October 2009

According to the M.A. thesis of Albert Adatto, a student of University of Washington in 1939, (“Sephardim and the Seattle Sephardic Community”), the first two Sephardic Jews Jack Policar (d. 1961) and Solomo Calvo (d. 1964), arrived in Seattle from the island of Marmara, Turkey in 1902. The first Turkish Jew to arrive in Seattle is thought to have been David Levy in 1900. In 1904, they met Nissim Alhadeff, who had arrived that year from the Isle of Rhodes, between Greece and Turkey, in a Seattle Greek Café. In addition to Marmara and Rhodes, Sephardim from Tekirdag (Rodosto) and Istanbul (Constantinople) joined the first Turkish Jews immigrant group. Almost all were young men, and after a few years some went back to their homes in Turkey to marry and bring their new wives to Seattle. Shortly thereafter the first of the American-born Sephardim appeared."

On the Wind Energy in Turkey

"On the Wind Energy in Turkey
Erdogdu, Erkan
Abstract

What happened in Istanbul is a Conspiracy, or a Reality?

"What happened in Istanbul is a Conspiracy, or a Reality?
Ihsan Bal
Head of Security Studies
USAK

Tuesday, 22 December 2009

We live in a time where people give more importance to conspiracy theories that only confuse their minds with the process of the democratic initiative. Turkey is not unfamiliar with conspiracy theories. However, if we think that everything is a conspiracy, it may be a handicap in our navigation to the facts. Moreover, if we say that there are no conspiracies, and then we cannot see the traps set for our country. From this perspective, how can we explain to the public about the people who broke the store glasses and pointed their fingers to demonstrators in Dolapdere, a suburb province of Istanbul? Recently, when we look at the comments, we will see that our habits continue. We suppose that we reach reality by looking from one side. However, there are three realities within one another."

Awesome Blossom: Travelogue Turkey: Beautiful Sophia

"Travelogue Turkey: Beautiful Sophia
I stand under the great dome of Hagia Sophia, inhale deeply and subtly wipe the tears from the corner of my eyes.

Yeah, cheesy. But seriously, I do cry. A bit.

My sentimental value towards this building is akin, presumably, to a die-hard Manchester United fan from Malaysia finally stepping inside the glorious Old Trafford. A guy who spends his whole life watching the games in front of the idiot box thousand of miles away from where the action really is, wondering how awesome it would be to be one of the spectators in the stadium. He knows the arena and its history inside out, and probably can recite all the notable games ever played there. He has never been to Old Trafford, but he has always been there, you know? Thus on the day when he finally steps on the green pitch of the stadium, it is as if he is returning to someplace familiar."

Turkish Discrimination Against Christian Schools–Or Is It? « Scriptamus

"Turkish Discrimination Against Christian Schools–Or Is It?

December 22, 2009
Written by Lewis D. Eigen

Christian theological seminaries are currently banned in Turkey. Yet this is a prohibition with which some Westerners and Christians agree, and even those who do not, often understand. The complexity that has resulted from the clash between Islam and modernity is so great that it is almost impossible to tell what is liberal and democratic and what is not. The conflict between Moslem Turkey and Christianity with respect to theological seminaries is a marvelous example of things being in reality very different from what they first appear. This is the story of complexity where up can be down and wrong might be right."
