"TURKISH FILM FESTIVAL (Friday through Thursday) American audiences have become acquainted with Turkish cinema through the cool, formalist work of Nuri Bilge Ceylan (“Distant”) and the cross-cultural dramas of the Turkish-German director Fatih Akin (“The Edge of Heaven”), and here is a festival that suggests there is more to discover. The program opens on Friday with Erden Kiral’s drama “On Fertile Lands,” about three friends from the Turkish hinterlands who migrate to a provincial capital in search of work; banned on its first release in 1980, it was revived with success at this year’s Istanbul Film Festival."
