Geographically and culturally, Turkey straddles Europe and Asia. A Muslim democracy on the edge of the Middle East that is unwieldy and poor, it is nevertheless sure to join the European Union at some stage - despite its current political difficulties. The benefits of the accession process are already evident in its average growth of 8% per annum over the past few years - although membership may still be six or seven years off. It has also attracted substantial foreign investment and started to align its laws and regulations with those of the EU. "
