Religious orders, although prohibited, continue to be influential in Turkey, having many administrators and politicians as members, revealed the U.S. State Department's Country Reports on Human Rights Practices 2007. According to the report published Monday, the Turkish government generally respected the human rights of its citizens; however, serious problems remained in several areas. It listed restrictions on freedom of speech as one of the major setback to civil liberties, also listing a wide range of issues including constitutional restrictions, honor killings and the impact of religious orders as problem areas."
