French President Nicolas Sarkozy has sacrificed his cherished plan for an ambitious Mediterranean union to salvage his battered relationship with Germany, analysts and politicians have said.
Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed to a compromise on Monday over France's drive to create a new forum for countries that border the Mediterranean Sea, bringing the project within the fold of the full European Union."
