Friday, February 1, 2008
The Dutch Minister for European Affairs Frans Timmermans yesterday reiterated his country's support for Turkey's bid to join the European Union and called for close cooperation to realize Turkey's entry to the bloc. Timmermans, who was in Ankara on an official two-day visit, was speaking to reporters following a meeting with Foreign Minister Ali Babacan. Timmermans raised expectations that the close cooperation between Turkey and the EU will continue on the basis of the December 2004 agreement when the European Council decided to open accession negotiations and reiterated his country's support for Turkey's bid to join the EU. Earlier in the day, Timmermans held talks in Parliament and said he agreed that Turkey implemented reforms not only for full membership in the EU but also to become a prosperous state governed by the rule of law."
