Turkey, a NATO member, is a majority-Muslim, democratic nation that under siege from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a Marxist-oriented terrorist group that plagued Turkey during the 1980s and 1990s, and which raises much of its funding from drug trafficking and extortion from Turks living overseas."
