"Turkish ruling offers possible solution
A high-stakes decision by Turkey's top court this week has sent the predominantly Muslim country into uncharted legal territory.
The decision, which was made by the Constitutional Court and has not yet been published in the official register, annulled a first round of presidential elections in Parliament. It effectively barred the candidacy of Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, who has a background in Islamic politics. That step touched a deep nerve; Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced the verdict as a "bullet" fired at the heart of the democracy. Turkish leaders scurried to consult their copies of the largely untested 1982 Constitution."
