The Turkish prime minister has thrown down the gauntlet to the opposition and the military by proposing that the president be elected by popular vote.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan is gambling that his Justice and Development Party (AKP), a moderate Islamic entity, will win enough seats in parliamentary elections, which are expected to be brought forward from November to June, to be able to change the constitution to this effect."
