The principal ideology in Turkey that 'the people are there to serve the state, but not the state to serve the people' has long played a significant role in Turkish society, complicating the introduction of democratic concepts such as the rule of law, accountability, transparency and the good governance of the nation. Turkish citizens have long been intimidated from questioning their rulers over, for example, where their taxes are spent and for what purposes. "
