Last month an important development which remained in the shadow of the “fire” in the Middle East took place in Turkish politics. The “Group of Free Kurds” announced at a press conference held at the Ankara Hilton Hotel on July 8, its preparations since 16 months to found a new political party which will place the Kurdish problem at the top of its agenda. A former Minister of Public Works, Serafettin Elci, who was imprisoned for saying in 1979 “There are Kurds in Turkey, and I am a Kurd” is the spokesman for the group which also includes Hasim Hasimi, Mehmet Emin Sever, Ibrahim Aksoy and Mehmet Ali Eren.
