The Turkish Cypriot community is a community that approaches modernity in fear. The disentanglement process of the Ottoman Empire on one hand combined with the rise of Hellenic nationalism in Cyprus on the other hand troubled the Muslim population during the 19th century. The ending of the Muslims' position as a 'Ruling Nation' that ended with the start of British colonialism on the island followed by the total break up of the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the 20th century later on, replaced this anxiety with fear and some desperation. "
