In regard to recent tensions between Muslim and non-Muslim communities in France and England, the panel will discuss the possible outcome of the European Union accepting Turkey and its predominantly Muslim population as its 26th member state.
Burstain characterized Turkey as an anomaly in the Arab world. Though its population is predominantly Muslim, its culture is European because of a modernization campaign instituted by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder and first president of modern Turkey."
