Economics: French economy growing strong - by Nicola Cappin

The French economy has been growing well in comparison to other European countries, say economists, who argue that France is defying the natural instinct of its neighbours to follow Germany. Frances Hudson, global thematic strategist at Standard Life Investments, says France’s growth momentum and unemployment rates are currently more favourable than Germany’s though she points out that what happens in Europe tends to be linked to what is happening in the latter. “The French recovery appears to be gaining momentum and industrial and construction figures released recently were better than expected as a result of the pick up in exports,” she says.

“Order books are looking healthy although going forward there might be a few hiccups with Airbus. However, on the plus side this has fed through to consumer spending.” Hudson feels that, in contrast with Britain, there is still a strong manufacturing industry in France, particularly when it comes to making things like trains.
