While I was researching Istanbul in a Barnes and Noble café, I heard a sweet, young voice say, "I'm from Istanbul. Can I help you?"
The voice belonged to Aylin Cig, a physics student at Columbia University. She told me not to stay in the Old City.
"There are just tourists there," she said. "Stay in Taksim where everything happens. Then you can visit the Old City—the Blue Mosque, Topkapi, Hagia Sophia—during the day, and be with the Turks in the evening." "
