In April a jury in Brussels consisting of European art and culture experts assessed all the applications and recommended Istanbul, together with Essen and Pecs, to be the European Capital of Culture in 2010. This honor is slowly facilitating a healthy environment for debate. This debate is slowly moving from the media to professional journals and most importantly is attracting public curiosity."
