At a rocky site two hours drive from Istanbul, soldiers are preparing to fight an enemy they know they cannot defeat -- one that threatens to lay waste to Turkey's greatest city.
If an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 or greater strikes Istanbul as scientists say is likely in the next 30 years, the toll would be horrific: tens of thousands dead, countless others injured or left homeless, masterpieces of Byzantine and Ottoman civilization reduced to rubble. "
