"All eyes on the phone in Ankara, as Turkey awaits word from Luxembourg
With the EU Foreign Ministers holding their council meeting in Luxembourg today, all eyes in Ankara await a phone call giving Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul the go ahead to signal his departure for Luxembourg.
The critical question is whether or not the Greek Cypriots will be successful in getting a paragraph urging Turkey to open its air and sea ports to Greek Cyprus inserted into the "shared stance" document to be used doing the literal talks. If this paragraph is not inserted, the Greek Cypriots have informed EU officials that they will use their right to veto Turkey's progression. Ankara, meanwhile, is holding strong against the Greek Cypriots' request. Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul has said that he will not be going to Luxembourg if the decision that Ankara is expecting and waiting for does not emerge from today's meeting of EU ministers in Luxembourg.
