The good news is that the first chapter of Turkey's accession negotiations to join the European Union is due to open next week. It will cover the relatively uncontentious subjects of science and research.
The bad news is that it has taken more than eight months to get to this point from October 3, when the 25 EU member states finally agreed to launch the talks. If the same speed were applied to the other 34 chapters in this exercise - most of them far more difficult to deal with - the whole process would last rather more than 20 years."
