UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Friday the time was not yet ripe for new talks on unifying Cyprus and called for a six-month renewal of the U.N. peacekeeping force on the Mediterranean island.
'While calls have come from all concerned for the resumption of negotiations, it appears that the conditions surrounding such a resumption necessitate further clarifications,' Annan said.
Absent a comprehensive reunification deal, the presence of the peacekeepers 'continues to be necessary,' he said in his latest progress report on Cyprus to the U.N. Security Council."
