From November 2002 until now, the Justice and Development Party has put on a performance unlike anything seen in our recent history in opening up a path to the European Union for Turkey. The self-confidence resulting from these successes helped the government to duly prepare for the Dec. 17 summit and get the most deserved outcome at the summit, i.e., the decision to start full membership talks. As a result of these successes, the support of the Turkish people was therefore won. Today, unfortunately, the same administration is defending itself both at home and abroad and is working its way at an alarming rate through the credit it accumulated for itself. We have witnessed over the past few days three examples of the direction the government is currently heading. "
