Another year draws to a close and the 31-year-old occupation of the island nation of Cyprus continues. The 1974 invasion of Cyprus by Turkey and the United Nations' inability to force the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the island or broker an agreement for the reunification of Cyprus stands as a monument to the abject failure of the U.N.
A tiny nation, no bigger than Connecticut, Cyprus is cut in two, with the northern third of the island under control of Turkey, which set up a puppet government after the 1974 invasion. Only one country recognizes the illegal 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.' You guessed it, Turkey."
