Turkish FM Gul to boycott unofficial EU-NATO FMs dinner to protest EU shelving direct trade regulation that would have ended Turkish Cypriots' isolation
Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul won't attend an informal dinner of European Union-NATO foreign ministers tomorrow to show his uneasiness with the EU shelving direct trade regulation that would have ended the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots.
The EU promised Turkish Cypriots in April 2004, before the vote on the Annan plan, that they wouldn't 'be left out in the cold' if they accepted the plan that was rejected by the Greek Cypriot administration. The European Commission, following the Greek Cypriot rejection, prepared two regulations aiming at direct aid and trade with the Turkish Cypriots but because of Greek Cypriot pressure the EU presidency had to separate the regulations and shelved the one on direct trade.
