ANKARA, Turkey -- Just after becoming Turkey's leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan flew to Italy, a strong supporter of his nation's bid to join the European Union, and joked that Turkish membership should be a 'Catholic wedding' -- one that lasts forever.
