Scepticism about Turkey’s push to join the European Union was easy to find on Berlin’s streets on Tuesday.
“I am against Turkish membership,” said Harald Martens, a 58-year-old Berliner. “I know that there are many arguments in favour of it, but it is a gut instinct. Their way of life and religion simply doesn’t fit.”
Even among ethnic Turks living in Germany, the question of Turkish entry – a development no one expects before 2015 – is already causing a certain foreboding."
