Irrespective of whether Turkish officials and the public are pleased with it or not, there is a role that Turkey cannot escape playing: A predominantly Muslim nation governed by a secular democratic parliamentary system.
Some prominent Turks and particularly the Kemalist establishment in this country may not feel very happy when the Americans and others talks of a �Muslim democracy� in Turkey, or they might be annoyed with statements that point out that Turkey demonstrates that Islam and democracy can coexist."
