Apart from being the anniversary of the landing of Mustafa Kemal and some of his comrades-in-arms in Samsun, today is considered the anniversary of the start of the Turkish War of Liberation.
Officially, the aim of Atat�rk's trip to Samsun was not to organize a national movement for the liberation of Turkey from occupying forces; indeed, that was what the founder of modern Turkey launched the moment he arrived in Samsun. Therefore, today is the anniversary of the beginning of the transformation of the resistance of scattered groups of patriotic people against the occupation forces into a full-fledged national mobilization and struggle, the motto of which was �Independence or death,� under the leadership of Atat�rk. "
