ONLY one in 10 tourist beds operating in the north is legally Turkish Cypriot owned, the CTO said yesterday, warning it was only a matter of time before British tour giants latched on to the potential across the Green Line.

There are 110 hotel units operating in the north with 11,000 beds of which only 1,150 are legally owned by Turkish Cypriots, Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) chairman Photis Photiou told the House Commerce Committee.

The committee was discussing the impact that increasing tourism to the north would have on the Greek Cypriot sides tourism industry, the mainstay of the economy.

He said the CTO had prepared an information leaflet in collaboration with the Foreign Ministry that has been dispatched to all embassies and tourist offices of the Republic abroad, outlining the exploitation of Greek Cypriot properties in the north."
