The visit of German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder along with a huge business delegation to Istanbul was of major importance. Germany is still Turkey's biggest trade partner in the European Union and an unpaid advocate in its relations. No doubt Schroeder is well aware of the domestic difficulty he faces in the EU by following a Turkey-friendly policy. In his first four years he didn't come to Turkey at all, and now he comes here frequently. "
