CANNES Fatih Akin, at 31 the youngest member of the Cannes jury, wears his jet-black hair short, his sideburns long, and one hoop earring. In public appearances he tends to mug, unlike his distinguished colleagues.
Akin, who calls Hamburg his home, directed the surprise 2004 hit "Head-On," winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin festival, a dramatic film about his Turkish roots and the plight of women in a Muslim society. His new film, "Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul," a documentary on Turkish music, screened here out of competition."
