Boucher: No legal prohibition against travelling to occupied Cyprus
Washington, May 14 (CNA)-- US State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher has said there is no legal prohibition against US citizens travelling to Cyprus' northern Turkish occupied areas, adding that ''we certainly encourage congressional delegations to go out in the world and find out about situations that they're interested in''.
Boucher was asked to comment on reports that some members of Congress plan to visit the occupied part of Cyprus, travelling directly from Turkey to the illegal airport near Tymbou. The government of Cyprus has declared illegal all points of entry into the country, located in the occupied north.
Replying to questions, Boucher said ''US personnel, even government personnel, have been allowed to fly into Ercan airport and there's nothing stopping them from doing that''. "
