NICOSIA - Rauf Denktash, for nearly four decades the symbol of Cyprus� Turkish community, will be notable by his absence as he avoids seeking a fifth mandate in Sunday�s presidential election, his political image tarnished in recent years by his intransigent nationalism.
Elected in 1985 as president of the tiny Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), recognized only by Turkey, Denktash was re-elected in 1990, 1995 and 2000 before finally announcing that he was stepping down this year."
