Indian policemen are lending a hand to the UN force in a troubled sector in Cyprus which runs through the old city of the worlds last divided capital, Nicosia.

Six Indian policemen are helping the UN keep the peace in Cyprus, divided in 1974 when Turkey occupied the northern third of the island and cleared the area of its Greek Cypriot citizens.

The commander of the Indian contingent attached to the UN force is Inspector Satwinder Singh Lally of Bhopal. He is also in charge of civilian police operations in Sector 2 of the UN buffer zone which separates the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communal zones.

This sector, with its base at the once fashionable but now crumbling Ledra Palace Hotel, runs through the old city of Nicosia which is surrounded by 16th century Venetian walls. Nicosia is worlds last divided capital. "
