ANKARA Turkish Daily News
Ankara said yesterday that it did not expect a process of screening of Turkish regulations by European Union experts to last too long, as Turkey has already done a significant portion of the work over the past years.
The screening process is not expected to be too long. What we emphasize is that accession negotiations with Turkey should officially start on Oct. 3, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Namik Tan told a news briefing.
He was responding to a question over reports of a statement on Tuesday by the EU's Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn that the screening process with Turkey could take up to a year, thus delaying the actual start of accession talks to the third quarter of 2006."
