How many Samasts we have in Turkey?
"How many Samasts we have in Turkey?
Ogün Samast, accused of murdering Hrant Dink, is a 17-year-old hitman. The mastermind behind the act, Yasin Hayal is a former bombing suspect.
With four more of their friends, they were arrested on charges of forming a 'gang.' Erhan T., who they referred to as 'Big Brother,' was reported to have frequently informed the police of the act in advance as an informer. As things get complicated with the removal of the Trabzon governor and security director from office, another debate as to the number of potential Ogün Samasts has erupted."

In Turkey’s one of the hardest times, the transformation of the Central Asia and Caucasus appeared on the international arena and in a way presented an important way out for Turkey. Thinking there was no more importance of Turkey due to the end of the Cold War, the Western European countries and even the US in some degree explicitly externalized Turkey at the beginning of the 1990s. Turkey also had the similar hesitations and began to think that it could not dwell in the Western World after the threat of communism disappeared."

Iran clearly seeks to lure Turkey away from its traditional moorings to the West, and the Kurds may be just the wedge it needs.

Feb. 12, 2007 issue - If you were a mullah in Tehran facing a new western "coalition of the willing," there's one country you would try to get on your side: next-door NATO neighbor, Turkey. And lately, the Iranians have been doing this quite well. The reason: Ankara and Tehran increasingly share a cause that unites them: Kurdish guerrillas operating in northern Iraq, and America's failure to do anything about them."

Turks in Europe: Why are we afraid?
There is a new political contest about the relationship between the European Union and its 'national' components, and how they all should deal with 'outsiders'. The prospect of Turkey's entry to the EU has triggered a remarkable outburst of fear and anxiety in some member states. Voters know that issues of national identity, the economy, social welfare and future migration are all tied up in some rather momentous way with Turkey's projected accession, but cannot see too clearly how. This pamphlet, published by The Foreign Policy Centre, tries to bring the argument back down to the individual level."

LIKE SO MANY Americans, I am geographically illiter- ate. I take no pride in saying so, but the plain truth is: I don't know much about other places. I'm pretty much a homebody, and as such, I've never pushed myself to learn. I know the basics--the 50 states, the seven continents, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans--but beyond that, my knowledge is kind of shaky. Along with classical music, geography remains one of the great gaping holes in my own education. "

Prominent among the many questions that surround Turkey's election year is whether current Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan decides to seek the presidency. Although Mr. Erdogan is not likely to announce his decision until April, in time for a new president to be chosen before the term of current President Ahmet Necdet Sezer expires in May, the prospect of Mr. Erdogan, a moderate Islamist, in the presidency and his Justice and Development Party (AKP), also Islamist, ruling Parliament has caused concern about the possible erosion of Turkish secularism. MIDDLE EASTERN OUTLOOK
AEI Online
Publication Date: February 2, 2007
While the campaigns have not officially begun, election season in Turkey is heating up. This spring, the Turkish parliament will select a president to replace current president Ahmet Necdet Sezer, whose seven-year term ends on May 16, 2007. On or before November 4, 2007, Turks will head to the polls to choose a new parliament. Not only does this year mark the first since 1973--and 1950 before that--in which Turks will inaugurate a new president and parliament in the same year, but this year’s polls will also impact the future of Turkey more than perhaps any election in the past half century. If Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wins the presidency and his Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi, also known as AKP) retains its parliamentary majority, Islamists would control all Turkish offices and be positioned to erode secularism and redefine state and society."

'If Lewis had an interest in exploring the decline of the Middle East, he would be asking why the new, more dynamic historical system that lay behind the rise of the West had not emerged in the Middle East, India, China, Italy, or Africa. If he had asked this question, it may have directed him to the source and origins of Western hegemony. But Lewis ducks this issue altogether. Instead, he takes the growing power of the West—its advances in science and technology—as the starting point of his narrative and concentrates on demonstrating why the efforts of Islamic societies to catch up with the West were both too little and too late."

The Enemy stalks us: powerful, seductive and insidious, its deathly sphere of operations ranging from the plains of Anatolia to the sidestreets of Taksim and the bars of Bodrum. Everyday the casualty list grows longer. Worst of all, the casualties in Turkey's "other war" are those least prepared to defend themselves: the children. The Enemy is the burgeoning crisis of drug abuse by Turkish young people – and unless immediate and concerted action is taken to confront it, The Enemy will win here – as it has already won in the crack-infested streets of New York, in the heroin-hell parks of Zurich and along the pot-head canals of Amsterdam, claiming tens of thousands of young victims in its murderous wake. MARK LIEBERMAN
ISTANBUL
It is true that none of the parties, including Turkey, Greece, the UK and the United States, as well as the UN and EU, involved with the decades-long conflict on the eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus, would care to talk openly about the formal partition of the island.
