Ottoman sultans beheaded male relatives lest they turn into rivals. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has carried out a less gruesome variety of the same policy against one of his closest allies, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, who was forced to resign on Thursday.
