Fear factor and desire for stability ensured Erdogan victory

THE JUSTICE and Development Party (AKP) scored a landslide victory in Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Turkey. The 49.4 per cent of the vote it took gave it 317 seats in the 550-seat parliament which is a very a comfortable majority. It was a major turnaround since the June elections in which it lost the parliamentary majority that it enjoyed for 12 years, leaving it unable to form a coalition government.
