Battle of the Booths: Contemporary Istanbul to Open 10th Edition

On the heels of its young rival Art International (AI), the 10th edition of Contemporary Istanbul (CI) runs November 12 through 15. The third edition of AI ran simultaneously with the launch of the city’s prestigious biennial in early September, but the overlap may have ultimately hurt the fair more than it helped. Under pressure from the biennial’s organizers, AI officials were forced to open the fair a day later than planned. “Think of the biennial as Apple: It doesn’t play well with others,” says Kerimcan Güleryüz, owner and director of Istanbul’s Empire Project, a participant in both fairs this year.
