Turkey's Election: What The Future Looks Like
For the optimistically inclined, the election results in Turkey herald positive changes. The pro-Kurdish HDP party got enough support to enter parliament, thereby preventing President Erdogan’s own AKP party from a gaining a clear majority. His plans to transfer executive power over to himself in the Presidency now look unattainable. Unprecedentedly, members of Turkey’s Christian minority got seats as representatives of their communities. The AKP must settle for governing through coalitions. The legal checks and balances on his power that Mr. Erdogan repeatedly overrode in recent years may now return in the form of parliamentary compromises forged by coalition dictates–in effect, through the ballot box. What could be more democratic? So far, positive. As the cynics like to say, what could go wrong?
