There is no sun or sky to convey a sense of time and place. In this labyrinth of anfractuous streets without end, under vaulted roofs, all the shops look the same. The Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, is famous for its thousands of shops hawking everything from carpets to gold jewelry to soccer shirts. Pausing by an old marble water fountain in an intersection much like many others I have already passed, I try to retrace my steps out of this city within a city.
