Turkey highlights liberalism’s failings

Turkey’s controversial Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is the first popularly elected president of Turkey. Turkey’s previous 11 presidents were elected by the Turkish Parliament. Erdogan’s victory, after months of domestic protests and widespread criticism of his authoritarian style, will add to the global debate over illiberal democracy gaining ground.
