İstanbul's Grand Bazaar is losing its historical texture

İstanbul's Grand Bazaar is losing its historical texture

The 550-year-old Grand Bazaar (Kapalı Çarşı), one of İstanbul's most popular tourist destinations, faces destruction. Water is leaking inside the historic bazaar from its broken windows. Moisture and humidity is slowly destroying the bazaar's walls as the plaster is being stripped away by occasional patches of moss. The wall decorations, which are considered unique examples of traditional Ottoman decorative art, are slowly being destroyed. The garbled power, Internet and telephone cables snake around the ceiling of the bazaar and cause a fire risk. Like its interior, the exterior of the historical bazaar is in a deplorable state. Its roof is occupied with water tanks containing tons of water, air conditioners and satellite dishes. If renovation work is not started at once, the roof of the historical bazaar may collapse at any moment.
