ANKARA: Since it became the capital of modern Turkey in 1923, Ankara has been constantly judged for everything it isn’t – namely Istanbul. Living in the shadow of the older, more attractive Istanbul, the sleepy town-cum-capital has come under unfair criticism for its “ugliness” and urban sprawl. Such comparisons overlook Ankara’s ancient roots and the charms of its hilly old city.
