The Gezi Park protests represented one of the most significant opposition movements faced by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in its 12-year rule.
Therefore, they provided a golden opportunity for the ruling party and groups that were affected by its extremely dangerous "polarization" to engage in a process of self-interrogation and self-criticism and see their wrongs. But Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his senior aides opted to effectively utilize these protests to further exacerbate social tension and polarization. All criticism or warnings about the potential dangers of this approach fell on deaf ears. This irresponsible policy and method of governance divided society into two opposing poles. Berkin Elvan's death stunningly exposed the country's current position, which is attributable to the ruling party, now embattled by graft and bribery allegations.
