Turkey attempts to protect itself from the Syrian fall-out by renewing a mandate for intervention

The Turkish parliament recently renewed a government mandate that would allow Ankara to send troops to neighboring war-torn Syria if the government deemed it necessary. The motion, valid for one year, was first endorsed by parliament last year with a 320-129 vote after mortar shells from Syria killed five civilians in the border town of Akçakale. The government then said it had no intention of going to war with Syria despite blaming Assad’s government for the incident.
