Turkey: protests fail to dent Istanbul tourism

(ANSAmed) - ROME, JULY 16 - The number of people making their way to Istanbul in June rose by 2% (957,894 visitors) compared with the previous year (957,894). Despite the massive protests in centrally-located Taksim Square early in the month and the violent crackdown by Turkish authorities, the Istanbul Directorate-General of the Culture and Tourism Ministry reported no repercussions on the sector. The largest share of tourists came from Germany (552,185), followed by Russia (296,765), the US (234,183) and France (224,987).
