Turkey's leading opposition party shocked by Ankara's U-turn toward Damascus
Ankara, 3 November – Turkey's main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), is warning against the dangerous U-turn in Turkish foreign policy that is about to be taken by the ruling Justice and Development (AKP) party. In talks to the daily Hürriyet, CHP deputy Birgül Ayman Güler denounced the “plot about democracy and liberty” staged by the West in order to pave the way for an invasion of Syria. Underscoring that she and her party were by no means uncritical supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government, Güler warned against participating in a plot to invade Syria, which would result in the killing of thousands.
